Official Opening of Intercomm Headquarters

Intercomm's newly refurbished Headquarters in North Belfast were officially opened on the 6 th of April 2006 . The opening ceremony was performed by US Consul General Dean Pittman and some 80 people took part in the celebrations, including Belfast 's Lord Mayor Wallace Browne, various community representatives, funders as well as Intercomm staff, Directors and associates.

Amongst those speaking at the event was the Belfast Local Strategy Partnership's Chief Executive, Dr Eddie Jackson . He concluded that “Intercomm Ireland has built itself a strong international reputation as an organisation firmly focused on building peace by supporting individuals and enabling them to achieve their full potential through education, job creation, economic regeneration and conflict resolution skills. This philosophy is one which sits very happily with the whole ethos of the Belfast Local Strategy Partnership and I congratulate Intercomm on its many successes to date. I have no doubt that this new headquarters will be the launch pad for yet more innovative schemes to drive forward its objectives and I wish the organisation continued success.”

Intercomm's own Executive Director, Liam Maskey commented that “it's marvellous to have such a flagship building and there is no doubt that the new premises have given us a lift in enthusiasm as well as profile, but we certainly aren't in any position to rest on our laurels. The real success of this building will lie in how the community use it and how they avail themselves of the facilities it provides, and that is an appetising challenge for all of us. The new headquarters provides the opportunity we need to grow projects which have already demonstrated their value and to tackle important new ventures. It is a business-like presence for an organisation which itself will have to grow to achieve sustainability in all its involved programme and ethos.”

The new Intercomm Headquarters provides offices and large open plan rooms suited to accommodate training, meetings and conferences. In association with The World Bank , the new Headquarters also houses a Global Development Learning Network high tech video conferencing facility which links Belfast to a partnership of more than sixty distance learning centres and other public, private and non-Governmental organisations around the globe; all involved in developing the social economy in their respective locations. Intercomm is also planning to spread the benefits of this modern system by establishing access facilities in Enniskillen, Sligo, Dundalk, Co. Tyrone and Donegal and by allowing local businesses to tap into the resource from equipment which can be placed on their own desktops.
