Community Relations Coordination

Intercomm’s Peace Building Programme exists to transform conflictual relationships between the people of North Belfast through conflict intervention, dialogue, education, research and policy analysis, thereby contributing to the creation of a script for second track peace and relationship building.

Within the overall aims of promoting peace-building skills as a means of community empowerment, community relations coordination is a primary focus. Hence, Intercomm helps maintain structures for effective dialogue between a range of key stakeholders in North Belfast and also brings the local community, government departments, key statutory bodies and academia into practical contact on an on-going basis. By organising seminars, conferences, workshops and information events, Intercomm also promotes and supports peace building skills development both at individual and group levels.

Intercomm hosted delegation from St Joseph's
Secondary School, Navan County Meath
as part of the cross-border
confidence building work.

Recently Intercomm-sponsored workshops, seminars and information events have included ‘Community Development and Structures of Political Power’ and have dealt with diverse topics such as ‘Dealing with the past’; equality and human rights; and the intergenerational effect of conflict.

As North Belfast becomes more multi-cultural there has also been a concerted effort on behalf of Intercomm to increase events and activities to reflect this change. Sponsored events have included:
- Multi Cultural Sports Day in partnership with Waterworks Sports Facility and The Greater New Lodge Community Festival. Young people from Indian Community Centre joined in with local young people for a fun sports day with competitions in soccer, gealic football, cricket, tug of war, egg and spoon race, three-legged race, sack race and puc fada.
- Anti-Racism Training facilitated by NICEM for Intercomm staff and members of OFMDFM, the Belfast Islamic Centre, Ulster University Jordanstown, the Edward De Bono Foundation, Crossing Cultures, the Star Neighbourhood Centre and the One World Youth Centre.
- Introductory presentation of the Islamic Faith was organised in five North Belfast Primary Schools (2 Catholic, 2 Protestant, 1 Integrated) in conjunction with the Belfast Islamic Centre.
