Maria Brady is employed by Intercomm as the WEAVE Project Manager. The project helps women to learn how to make and sell fabric giftware, combining craft and business skills. Maria holds a BA Honours Degree in Politics and Sociology from Queens University, Belfast and an Msc in Political Communication and Public Affairs. She has completed the ILM First Line Management Certificate and Diploma In Management.
Her role as the Project Manager is to ensure that its strategies and plans are effectively and efficiently delivered. To lead the project and promote a sustainable approach to micro-enterprise. Jessica joined Intercomm in June 2005 and works as administrative assistant to the CEP team (North Belfast Community Empowerment Programme), as well as to the Director and other Intercomm staff members. She has a Bachelors and a Masters Degree in Social Sciences from Uppsala University, Sweden, with main specialisation in Peace & Conflict Studies. Prior to beginning her position at Intercomm she completed a five-month internship at INCORE, University of Ulster/UN University. Jessica is currently enrolled as a research student at Queen's University, Belfast, pursuing a PhD on Religious Actors and Peacebuilding in Northern Ireland. Seán Brennan is the Development Officer with the Edward de Bono Foundation NI. The Foundation is currently working in partnership with Intercomm through the NBCAU Community Empowerment Programme. Seán’s current responsibilities focus on providing training and advice in creativity and innovation for a wide range of community groups, educationalists and businesses working in North Belfast. Seán joined the Foundation in May 2004 to organise training in the Edward de Bono Six Thinking Hats and CoRT (Cognitive and Research Trust) for community/voluntary groups as well as schools, statutory organisations and the business community operating in North Belfast. This training contributes to Intercomm’s wider Peace Building and Conflict Intervention programmes, to develop social and economic regeneration by promoting creative and innovative approaches to conflict transformation in interface areas. Jean is Intercomm’s Financial Manager and has held this position since she first joined the organisation in 1995. Jean is also Manager of Intercomm’s New Deal and Work Track employment and training project. Before starting her current job, Jean held the position as Manager of Newington Cavehill Community Services between 1993 and 1995 and was Assistant Manager at St Patrick’s Community Enterprise for nine years before that. She also won the National Training Award 1991/92.
In addition to her positions at Intercomm, Jean is currently also Treasurer for both St Vincent de Paul (St Patrick’s Conference) and St Kevin’s Senior Citizens’ Club. John Loughran - Developing Leadership Initiative Project ManagerE-mail:john@intercommbelfast.comDepartment: Peace Building
John is the Programme Director for Intercomm’s North Belfast Developing Leadership Initiative and has been with Intercomm since 1996 developing hands-on practice in conflict intervention and conflict monitoring. Throughout this period John has organised international peace-building seminars and workshops that have attracted speakers and delegates from Chile, South Africa, Mozambique, The United States and the Basque Country. He has also participated in various peace-building programmes and conferences dealing with political transition, demobilisation and re-integration of ex-combatants, restorative justice and conflict resolution throughout the world, including in South Africa, Nicaragua, The Basque Country, the United States, the Middle East and Ireland. Having gained extensive experience in mediation and intention in localised conflicts across north Belfast John’s work has now moved beyond the firefighting approach to the development and implementation of strategic peace-building interventions that will aim to develop local sustainable structures aimed at promoting non-violent approaches to conflict. John’s dedication to community development and justice is evident by his voluntary work on the board of Relatives for Justice , a support group for families bereaved through state and state sponsored murder and on the board of the Ashton Centre , a community initiative in North Belfast that delivers a host of social and educational programmes aimed at empowering local people. Conor joined Intercomm in December 2000 as Training and Development co-ordinator, after nearly four years in private industry as a Human Resource Assistant.He is presently the co-ordinator of Intercomm’s Peace Building Programme and has responsibility for organising programme events, discussions and seminars for local people and community workers with the aim of providing a link with the ‘bigger picture’ of the peace process. In 1996 he participated in a political awareness trip to South Africa in which a delegation of students analysed the political and economic structure changes since the end of apartheid in South Africa. In that same year he was part of a three-person Irish delegation that went to the UN Headquarters in New York for a world youth conference at which he was chairperson.Conor has also taken part in ‘peace building’ and ‘leadership development’ programmes in Harvard University, Massachusetts (1998) and Columbia University, New York (2004). Eithne joined the Intercomm team in September 2003 to assist in the overall financial strategy of the Enterprise programme. She initially became involved with Intercomm when it was previously named Newington Cavehill Community Services Association as a founding board member. Her career has been in the financial and manufacturing sectors. She joined Allied Irish Bank when she left school in 1974. After 14 years she joined a local manufacturing firm Delta Print & Packaging Ltd as Credit Controller and assistant to the Financial Controller. She remained employed there for a further 14 years. Believing totally in the ethos of Intercomm Eithne hopes her financial experience and training would be of some assistance to their aims and objectives. Gerard O’Reilly has been employed at Intercomm for over three years as North Belfast Interface Manager and Co-ordinator of the Interface Team. Before joining Intercomm, Gerard worked extensively in the community sector for over 20 years. He worked on a voluntary basis before seeking employment in the North Belfast area and was Project Co-ordinator for a Restorative Justice Programme for four years. The primary aims of the Intercomm Interface Team are to maximise dialogue between all communities, to empower local residents and groups to fully understand the complexities of interfaces, to ensure that there is real partnership with statutory bodies with a view of accountability, and to train people in regards to negotiation skills etc. There are 25 flashpoints and interfaces in North Belfast, each with a potential for unrest to surface at any time. The Interface Team aims to tackle the causes of the unrest with a view to create partnerships across the divide. We prioritise dealing with the issue of sectarianism and are in partnership with unionist and loyalist activists who share our vision of peace and prosperity. There are no quick fix solutions to the problems we face, yet it is imperative that we plot a course of meaningful progress. We have a duty to ensure a better quality of life for all and feel that we are creating a foundation of positive motivation in dealing with the people living at the interfaces and who are most affected by the violence. Brian Quinn and Sean O’Neill helped to establish the newest programme supported by Intercomm. After collecting over a hundred questionnaires on the needs of those most vulnerable within the community, Sean and Brian facilitated the creation of HAVE in 2003. Home Aid for the Vulnerable and Elderly (HAVE) was set up to help diminish the susceptibility of individuals to physical attacks and household accidents. Both Brian and Sean have been active in community work in North Belfast for over 25 years. Each of them had experience working with Intercomm prior to the start of the HAVE programme and were involved in the Work Track scheme several years ago. Their dedication to the community is evident by the fact that they work in a voluntary capacity as HAVE’s co-managers. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and International Studies. While at Wheeling Sean was an All-American soccer player and a member of the student council. Seán spent the summer of 2005 working closely with the Intercomm staff on a number of projects. In December 2005 he was appointed to run the Intercomm International Internship Program with the goal to bring over students from both the United States of America and Canada to work closely with Intercomm staff on many of its North Belfast projects. Seán is employed by Intercomm Enterprises Ltd as Site Manage, and is also the Company Secretary for Intercomm and Intercomm Enterprises Ltd. Intercomm Enterprises Ltd renovates and refurbishes derelict houses on both sides of the peace line in order to halt the blight of dereliction, create local employment, encourage co-operation between the two communities and assist local residents to take their first step on the property ladder. Seán’s role as Site Manager is to liaise with builders, subcontractors, architects and quantity surveyors to ensure the timely completion of the project and to ensure it is completed to the high specification demanded. Seán has 17 years experience delivering facility projects for Bombardier Aerospace and holds a BA Honours Degree in Business and Management Studies from Queens University Belfast. |
